I'm right there with you on this. It defies logic. Good points.

i have always been a bit confused by this.
i can understand why a deity would want and demand respect.
i can similarly understand why a deity would want and demand loyalty.

i think of several movies and/or books regarding witness mindset.
this is one of my favorites:.
ever see this response when you say something not along party lines?.

Some of my other fave pop-cultural relationships to JWness are:
Really there are elements of each that may entirely or in some part relate to the manipulation to mind control that I've seen. These are just off the top of my head.
What are your favorites?

this seems to be the topic of the week, if not this year.. out of the many points and countless threads about this topic, many have been speculative and of the reminiscing sort.
i was wondering how many confirmations we have about this.
there were only a few that sounded like confirmations that i found posted on this site.
Only POs are supposed to know until Sunday. As noted a shortening and combining with TMS and SM to take effect Jan. 1, 2009.
The key word is "supposed". The cat's out of the bag in JW-land at least in some places. The real hordcore loyalists won't tell anyone until it comes from Mother. Ha.
So, since it takes effect in a year, my current behavior of not attending any meetings is just a precognitive jump on bagging them all. Oops... out in front of the chariot again.

there were already a few topics and posts about the motifs behind the changes, but i think we can unite them all in just one topic.. for a start i will say thar the letter that is going to be read next weekend, says that gb wants to reduce the burden (quotes acts 15:28), and adds that in many countries the gas (petroleum) is at a very high cost for some families.
then it makes a suggestion to use the same day for study at home with family.. of course that the text of hebrew 10:25 is not quoted!
- if we are more close to the end it should be taken the opposite measure!.
Hah! If they spin it as gas prices then I think they should bring it back once they return to "normal". Maybe whatever the price of gas was in 1975. Wait... wasn't that pretty expensive adjusted for inflation? Nevermind.
I think the liability issue of private homes has intriguing possibility as a REAL reason.

Yo. It's a lock. Sunday is the day. I just got off the phone with my mom.
I said, "So this bookstudy thing you emailed me about... It's been anounced?"
Mom: "Well, in one congregation locally [here in Sometown, Florida] it has. But most halls will hear it Sunday for the public talk"
[Editor's note: I suspect my mom is shining me a bit here. She probably heard from my dad who is tight with the PO]
Me: "Oh so how'd that work?"
Mom: "The PO got it in an email"
Me: "An email!? They do that by email now?"
Mom: "Yes, there is a computer at the Hall"
[Editor's note: sounds like a treasure trove of information. You would think the WTS would not want anything on email given thier stance on the EVILnet]
Me: "interesting"
Mom: "They'll probably shorten all the parts since some stuff in the MS, KM are redundant. I think it'll be a good thing. But I will miss the more intimate part of the home BS at XXXXXX's house"
Me: "Yeah"
Mom: "Dad said the BS was the worst attended of all the meetings. So they change when they need to."
Me: "Cool"
Anyway. That settles it for me. I didn't ask when this would take effect since I won't be going back anyway. It's just so much shuffling deck chairs IMO.

i posted this in my profile but since i've never formally introduced myself, i thought i would print it here as well as my official "hello" message.
i am currently an active jw.
i don't want to be but the situation i am in doesn't allow me to do anything differently.
Great story. I'm in that little boat behind you. I openly don't attend meetings and challenge several beliefs but I have not announced (renounced?) my lack of faith in the WTS/GB. I'm a very non-spiritual person. Literally...
-- Not Feeling It
i hope you guys are right about the book study being removed, .
i already told a few jws and they are shocked, i even told 2 elders, they are both surprised and one of them dont believe me he thinks its regarding the field service, maybe a special tract.
i wanted to show off and be a real "know it all" hahah.
Sup Y'all!
My mom who is very much in with my elder dad told me it is true. I did not ask. My mom announced it in an email to me and some other family. My dad is very tight with the PO and they make up a pretty unconventional KH. I'm not surprised at all if a few elders there know.
So if you wnat to attribute it to a neutral source, tell whoever that some guy you know from [insert BS source here] told you it was true because his witness mom told him. Or something.

...by the flds brouhaha down in texas?
obviously the doctrine is way different, but there are so many similarities: the haunted look in so many eyes, the oppressively patriarchy, the lack of feeling, the use of fear and separation for control, the whole everyone-else-is-evil mentality.
I'm sorry, but the part that fascinates me and creeps me out is how this group is singled out and how their rights have been trampled. Granted, I think there's something wrong with this insular cult and their prediliction with underage marriage. However, unless something has happened in the media since this story broke, technically speaking, every one of those marriages complies with Texas law.
Hey CoonDog,
I'm very intereseted in your take here. I had the same thoughts as you when this first started to go down. I think my mind changed a bit when I heard that there may be substantial inbreeding of the incestuous and underage fashion going on there. That is disgusting and should not stand. I think it is a slippery slope to tread but someone has to take care of children if thier religion/social group will not. I think even thier definition of parents is flawed and/or confused.
I believe strongly in protecting the rights of CONSENTING ADULTS. If that relates to sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll so be it. But in this case it is not hard to show there were not adults involved. And the consent looks more like distorted compulsion to get with some horny old guys.
The WT policy on blood is on similar footing. I think when they make life-threatening decisions for kids based on interpretation of scripture it is similar to what is going on in FLDS. Albeit FLDS isn't killing thier children.
As a side note, I think most or all of the people related to that cult that I've seen on TV are TOTALLY creepy. But I certainly don't think creepy equals right to take your kids away.
I hope there is a speedy resolution to as many of the cases as possible whether that be the return of children to thier rightful parents or continued protection from sexual abuse.
- Not Liking It
i am sure some of you remember speculation in the past that the borg would.
start false letters to smoke out the elders that are passing on the information .
to the evil apostates.. "a big announcement on april 24th" sounds like it could fit the bill.
Not a trap. Confirmed. May god strike me down if I'm wrong. Uh, yeah.
Now, here's a funnier picture.
